Midrash on Parshat “Lech Lcha,” Breishit/Genesis 12:11-20

Shabbat MarCheshvan 8, 5778 (Torah Portion “GO to yourself!”)

“Me too” whispered Sarai, hugging her knees to her chest, sitting in a fetal position.

“Me too” said Sarai, standing up to speak. Because my weak and fearful husband thought he needed to whore me out to Pharaoh to save his own life, because my faithless husband did not believe the blessings of Yud He Vav He—because Avram did not believe that we would together birth a great nation that would transmit blessings to the world.

“ME TOO” declared Sarai, drawing herself up to her full height and power. But I remembered the blessing of Yud He Vav He and upon my word, when I called out, Yud He Vav He plagued Pharaoh and prevented him from taking me, from raping me, from breaking me.

Now, to all you who have not been so blessed, to all who have been violated whether you cried out or not, to all those whose NO was not answered by mortal or by HaShem, please take note.

DO NOT EVER BELIEVE THAT YOU ARE LESS BELOVED, LESS PRECIOUS, LESS DESERVING A SOUL THAN I!

It just happened that back in my day there were so few of us and Yud He Vav He was much more engaged with micro-managing our lives. Humanity was so young and needed so much more oversight. At the beginning of this human experiment Yah wasn’t ready to give us all the free will you now have.

And there is another reason. The world you live in today is so populated and this human experiment is now so far down the pike that the call of any one person is rarely heard.

Your time is more like the 400 years when the Hebrews were enslaved in Egypt. Yah did not hear and did not respond until there was a collective cry to end the oneis/oppression/violations.

And if you don’t believe me, just look at my story. That dream my husband had soon after this incident about being slaves in Egypt? It is clearly linking this shift from individual to collective outcry to end oppression.

Today there are so many oppressions to call out. The magnitude of the cry must be EARTH SHAKING. Please do not despair. KEEP CALLING OUT ALL THAT MUST BE NAMED, ALL EQUALLY IMPORTANT!

ME TOO! ME TOO!

BLACK LIVES MATTER!

WATER IS LIFE!

NO HUMAN IS ILLEGAL!

HEALTH CARE, HOUSING, FOOD, EDUCATION, ACCESSIBILITY, EQUITY, REPARATIONS, PROSPERITY, ARE ALL HUMAN RIGHTS!

Together we can,

Your mother, Sarai.
