Spirit Led Justice Alliance *Action Alert* 10/2/19
We have the opportunity to say yes to solidarity and support for Burgerville workers this coming Sunday and we hope to see you there! Management is simply not bargaining in good faith. Since Burgerville’s founder professes to be a man of faith, it is critical that we show up in force as evidence that our faith demands fairness, justice, honoring and respecting the worker. Also on tap for next week is a call with IMIrJ to strategize on their ICE out of Oregon campaign. Welcoming the sojourner demands that ICE stop detaining people in courthouses!

To all of our Jewish friends and supporters, wishing you Gmar chatimah tova. May you be sealed for a year of goodness, peace and blessing. May your prayers this Yom Kippor be strong, your sense of community and renewal profound and your reflection deeply meaningful.
On behalf of the Spirit Led Justice Alliance,

Rabbi Debra Kolodny

Lift a Moral Voice for Justice for Burgerville Workers!

Over a year ago, workers in five Portland metro Burgerville stores voted to unionize. They have been in contract negotiations ever since. The Burgerville Workers Union has submitted a complete contract proposal to management. Issues have included consistent scheduling, safe working conditions, just-cause discipline and — in particular — wages! Many Burgerville workers make daily choices between groceries, rent and medical treatment. Management has not responded in good faith, particularly with respect to living wages.

On Sunday afternoon, October 6, at 1:30 PM, the Portland JwJ Faith-Labor Committee invites supporters to meet near the Burgerville Management offices, in downtown Vancouver, for a solidarity event to support the workers. There will be workers’ testimonies, messages from local faith leaders, music and food! RSVP on the Facebook event page by clicking here!

All people of faith and good will are invited to join us in raising a moral voice in support of these brave workers. Your presence can make a difference!

Join the Campaign to Make Oregon Courthouses Safe for All Residents!

IMIrJ’s “ICE Out of Oregon” campaign is engaging Oregon faith leaders and communities in efforts alongside legal and immigrant justice partner organizations to ensure that our courthouses and communities are safe and inclusive for all Oregon residents, regardless of immigration status.

The October 2019 Campaign Briefing is an opportunity to get the latest updates on the campaign; share updates, strategies, and tips from leaders across the state; and help shape the work moving forward. We’ll also discuss key actions that you and your community can take in the coming weeks and month. Please RSVP for that call by clicking here! (If you cannot make the call in real-time, IMIrJ will send you a full recording of the briefing)

Also – mark your calendars for Friday, October 18th at 2:00pm. This is when members of the Uniform Trial Court Rules (UTCR) committee will meet in Salem to consider a proposed rule to prohibit ICE arrests in and around Oregon courthouses. IMIrJ leaders will attend the hearing together to show our support for keeping ICE out of our courthouses.
