Spirit Led Justice Alliance *Action Alert* 12/07/18

Tonight, as we live into the expectant waiting energy of Advent and light our sixth Chanukah candle, an invitation to remember that miracles happen, victories over tyranny happen and the only way forward is together. Though we have invited you to take action on the proposed rule change penalizing immigrant families for using support programs, we want to make sure our new participants have the opportunity to take action before the December 10 deadline, so we are reposting this important action today.

We are continuing to grow in our commitment to taking action around workers by announcing a rally that is going to be happening this month for educators in North Marion School District, and also with a petition that we are encouraging people to sign regarding a worker who was fired for organizing at Cascadia!

After taking part in this week’s actions, please help us grow the impact of our alliance by considering someone in your life whose activism is informed by their faith, and invite them to receive our action alerts by sending this link.

You are warmly invited to join our next Interfaith service on Tuesday, January 15 at 7 pm. We will continue into the future on the third Tuesday of the month from 7-8 pm. Location TBD.

Stop Trump’s Cruel New Immigration Policy!

The Trump administration has proposed a rule change that would penalize immigrant families for participating in health, nutrition, and other support programs that help families make ends meet! “Public charge” is a term used in immigration law to refer to a person who is likely to become primarily dependent on the government to meet their basic needs. If someone is found to be a public charge, the government can deny admission to the U.S. or refuse an application for lawful permanent residency. Under the new proposed rule, the government now wants to redefine “public charge” more expansively, as an immigrant who receives one or more listed public benefits. Click here to submit your comment and SAY NO to this cruel new policy!

We have a chance to stop it, and you can help us lift up a moral voice. The government is required to read, count, review, and consider all public feedback before issuing a final rule. The deadline for comments is December 10. Our goal is to generate 100,000 comments, and as of this week, there are 86,364!

Immigrant families should not be forced to pick between legal status and putting food on the table for their families. And our country should not pick immigrants based on the size of their wallet or the color of their skin!

Support Oregon Educators Fighting for a Fair Contract!

As the  strikes in Washington have recently demonstrated, the community support for teachers can make all the difference! We know that the teachers want to teach, and teachers being able to have a living wage with a fair contract is necessarily a fight for better outcomes for students!

The teachers of North Marion are inviting all supporters in the community to join them on Monday Dec. 17th at 3:30pm outside fo the North Marion Middle School! Check out the Facebook event here for more details!

Help a Worker Retaliated Against for Organizing Get Their Job Back!

For nearly 16 years, Daneen Pray worked at Cascadia Behavioral Health Care, advancing the mission of the organization to provide mental healthcare those who need it. Daneen brought her heart to the work that she did, but unfortunately those years of service all came to an abrupt endafter she was seen communicating with an AFSCME organizer!
