Spirit Led Justice Alliance *Action Alert* 5/22/19
The Oregon legislative session has gone through so much this year. Together we’ve won meaningful victories for our communities, and there is still more work ahead! Please join our friends at IMIrJ this week in supporting our immigrant neighbors on two important bills! If Portland is home, and you are excited about prison abolition, consider attending new member training and orientation hosted by Critical Resistance! And as we continue to support actions to address the housing crisis, we can join a joyous sendoff and bless our friends at Give Us Shelter who will be marching from Portland to Salem for housing justice!
For those wondering about the action at Endeavour Capital we’ve mentioned before, we are postponing that event and adjusting, but please stay tuned for further information in the weeks to come as we continue this important moral divestment campaign!
Blessings to all as our Muslim friends continue to observe Ramadan and our Jewish friends celebrate L’ag b’Omer,
Rabbi Debra Kolodny for the Spirit Led Justice Alliance
Get Oriented to the Fight For Prison Abolition with Critical Resistance!
Critical Resistance Portland invites anyone interested in abolishing prison industrial complex abolition in Portland to join its efforts! Receive an introduction to Critical Resistance and on membership & volunteering followed by a workshop on the prison industrial complex & abolition. This is the first required step in becoming a chapter member and regular volunteer but attending is not making the commitment to join or volunteer!
Sunday, June 2nd. 10am-4pm. (Location will be emailed with confirmation!)
The event is capped at 20 people, so register asap! https://tinyurl.com/y4tjotlj Registration closes Tuesday, May 28th and confirmations will be sent on May 29th.
If you have any specific accessibility needs (childcare, language interpretation, training material sent ahead of time, etc), please let us know as soon as possible (replying to this email is great!) and we’ll do our best to figure out the right accommodation. Meeting location is an ADA accessible space with a large gender neutral bathroom. Natural unscented & mildly scented cleaning products are used. We will have unscented soap in bathrooms. We ask that you refrain from wearing scented products (including natural) at this training.
Support ‘Give Us Shelter’ And The Walk to Salem for Housing Justice!
We are in a crisis situation! Wages remain low while housing becomes more and more expensive, throwing many low income people and families deeper into poverty. This causes many people to be homeless or be on the verge of homelessness. Affordable housing is in short supply creating additional stress, over burdening the community as a whole and creating friction between the housed and un-housed. This is not just a urban crisis.
In light of these problems advocates are asking the Governor and the Oregon Legislature to do the following for the rights of the houseless. Join us for a community event to send off the crew that is marching to Salem!
Thursday May 23 from 5-9pm at Glenwood Park (SE 87th & Glenwood).
Support IMIrJ and the Fight for Important Immigrant Justice Legislation!
IMIrJ organized a legislative call-in and today we invite you to join the phone calling ball and support two immigrant justice bills: The Equal Access to Roads Act (HB 2015) and the Governor’s proposed Immigrant Defense Fund!
Here’s how to participate:
- Look up the phone numbers for your Oregon Senator and Representative: http://bit.ly/ORlegislator
- Take a couple minutes to review this sample script and talking points (also pasted below for quick reference).
- Make your two calls (one to your state Senator and one to your state Representative).
- Complete this micro-form to let us know you called and what you heard back!
