Spirit Led Justice Alliance *Action Alert* 5/29/19

As the Legislative season winds down it is inspiring to see that we have made progress on several issues of great moral import. To highlight a few of them, our efforts have helped protect youth from mandatory criminal sentencing, supported good jobs and the climate justice through the Clean Energy Jobs bill, supported educators and students through a historic increase funding through the Student Success Act, and limited those who may be eligible to be sentenced to the death penalty!

Today we have the opportunity to lift up our moral voices once more in support of Universal Health Care and in support of a wonderfully creative suit being led by youth concerned with preventing climate catastrophe!

And be sure to join us next week as we rally with AFGE and Veterans for Peace as they fightback against privatization of Veterans Healthcare!

On behalf of the Spirit Led Justice Alliance,
Rabbi Debra Kolodny

PS: Please remember not to attend the now postponed Endeavour Capital action on May 29. Stay tuned for more details in the future!

Support Legislation that Would Secure Health Care for All Oregon!

We are closer than ever to passing the Health Care for All Oregon Bill which establishes a Universal Health Care Commission and puts Oregon on the leading edge of the path to Single Payer.

As the bill is in the Ways and Means committee, we need you to persist in contacting your legislators to urge them to move SB 770 A4 and have a Public Hearing and Work Session. The countdown has started to end of session and we must get ahead of any opposition.

We must insist that now is the time to get on the real path to where everyone gets the care they need when they need it–a system free of out of control costs and denials of care!

To find your legislator:

If your legislator is on either of these committees, it is especially important that you contact them!

Say “there needs to be a Public Hearing scheduled on SB 770A with amendment A4 to create a Universal Health Care Commission.”

Many of those on the Committee are already sponsors but they need strong reminding of the need for a real health care system. Find Sponsors here.

Please contact the Co-Chairs of Joint Ways and Means and Co-Chairs of Human Services Subcommittee

Let them know that “we need a Public Hearing and Work Session on SB 770A and the amended 770-A4.”

Tell Your Health Care Story.

  • It is time to stop medical bankruptcy.
  • It is time to stop denials of care.
  • It is time for everyone to get the care they need.

Rally in Support of Youth Plaintiffs in Juliana v. United States!

TUESDAY, JUNE 4, 2019: 1:30 – 3:30 P.M. At Director Park, 815 SW Park Ave, 97205 (Co-sponsored by Ecofaith Recovery and Ecumenical Ministries of Oregon

Let us support the youth of this nation in demanding climate justice and recognition of the climate emergency. Youth are suing the federal government, seeking justice through court-ordered actions to mitigate the climate crisis and to prevent climate catastrophe. The Ninth Circuit Court is hearing their case on June 4.

The Juliana v. US lawsuit was filed in 2015 and established that young people have a constitutional right to “a climate system capable of sustaining human life.” By promoting a fossil fuel energy system, the US government violates the rights of all human beings, specifically those who are young and will live with the consequences of climate crisis as it threatens the lives of all future beings.

• Join the faith contingent no later than 2:30 with signs and clergy vestments no later than 2:30 p.m., at SW Park Ave. between Yamhill and Taylor.

• Watch the live stream of the hearing (youthvgov.org) on your devices and/or watch the live stream at the rally beginning at 2 p.m.

• Whether or not you can make it, film a 10-second video you’re your congregation/community saying that you support the Julianna youth plaintiffs. Upload your video at EcoFaithRecovery.org by June 3
