Spirit Led Justice Alliance *Action Alert* 6/13/19
It is the week after Shavuot and Pentacost. Many of us are still glowing from our experience of revelation and connection to all that is holy. Drenched in our tradition’s teachings around justice and love and welcome, we have the opportunity to put our faith in action by supporting vital legislation promoting equity and justice in this state!
In addition to the six bills we outline below, please do join us on today for the OHSU bargaining rally.
Hope to see you soon!
For the Portland Spirit Led Justice Alliance,
Rabbi Debra Kolodny
Welcome the Stranger! Show Solidarity with Refugees and Immigrants!
The federal government has made drastic cuts to programs and services that enable refugees already living in Oregon to start new lives free from fear and persecution. And the separation of immigrant families continues, with hundreds of Oregonians facing deportation because they can’t afford an immigration attorney — assistance that makes them 5.5 times more likely to avoid an unjust deportation.
Use this Tool to Find Your Legislators and Call on Them to Pass HB 2508 to provide education, employment, domestic violence survivor, health, housing and other key supports to up to 1,800 refugees who have recently arrived to Oregon.
Help End Child and Youth Homelessness in Oregon!
When it comes to the rate of child and youth homelessness, Oregon is worst in the country! 21,750 K-12 students experienced homelessness in 2017-18. Of those students, 3,493 were separated from their families because of domestic violence, family housing instability and family tension over the youth identifying as LGBTQIA. These young Oregonians are disproportionately people of color!
Contact your Elected Representatives in Salem and urge them to invest:
- $50 million for the Emergency Housing Assistance (EHA) and State Homeless Assistance Program (SHAP): Emergency rent assistance, supports to individuals, families.
- $9 million for Department of Human Services Runaway & Homeless Youth program: shelter, housing, jobs.
Ensure Every Oregonian Has Equal Access to Justice!
By passing HB 3145, we can take meaningful steps to address our state’s public defense system and dismantle some of the harmful structures that harm people of color.
The legislators voting on this law need to hear from Oregonians who care deeply about just how important this issue is!
